Iran has vowed retaliation after a U.S. submarine sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena near Sri Lanka, leaving more than 100 sailors dead or missing. The incident has intensified tensions in the Indian Ocean and placed India in a difficult diplomatic position as the wider Middle East conflict spreads closer to its region.
U.S. Submarine Sinks Iranian Frigate
A United States submarine torpedoed and sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena off the coast of Sri Lanka. According to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the attack marks the first time since World War II that an American submarine has destroyed an enemy surface vessel using a torpedo.
The warship was reportedly returning through the Indian Ocean when it was struck. The sinking dramatically extends the scope of the ongoing conflict involving Iran and U.S.-allied forces.
Casualties and Rescue Operation
Sri Lankan authorities responded quickly after receiving a distress signal from the damaged ship. Rescue teams managed to save 32 sailors from the water, while more than 100 crew members are believed to be dead or missing.
Officials described finding survivors and bodies floating in the sea near the wreckage, while oil slicks spread across the water. Some of the recovered victims were transported to hospitals in the southern city of Galle.
Warship’s Recent Visit to India
The IRIS Dena had recently participated in a major multinational naval exercise hosted by India in the Bay of Bengal. The International Fleet Review included ships from around 40 countries, including the United States and Russia.
The fact that the ship was returning from an Indian-hosted exercise has raised concerns among analysts about regional security and the possibility of naval confrontations expanding in the Indian Ocean.
Iran Condemns the Attack
Iranian officials strongly condemned the strike. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the attack as an “atrocity” and warned that the United States would face consequences for sinking the vessel.
Tehran has promised retaliation, raising fears that the already expanding conflict could escalate further beyond the Middle East.
Pressure on India’s Government
The incident has created political pressure for India’s government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Critics say New Delhi has avoided clearly condemning recent U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran.
Because India maintains strategic relationships with both Western allies and Iran, the situation places the country in a delicate diplomatic position as tensions continue to rise across the region.
