G7 Presses U.S. for Clarity on Iran War as Concerns Rise Over Russia-Iran Cooperation

At a G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in France, allied governments pressed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio for clearer details on Washington’s strategy in the war with Iran, while concerns grew about coordination between Russia and Iran.

Pressure on Washington at G7

Foreign ministers meeting at Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay sought a clearer explanation of how the United States plans to proceed nearly one month into the conflict.

Johann Wadephul said allies now face two overlapping crises: the war involving Iran and the continuing war in Ukraine, where Moscow and Tehran are seen as increasingly aligned.

He emphasized that Western unity must deepen because Russia and Iran are cooperating more closely than before.

No Joint G7 Communiqué

In a notable diplomatic departure, the G7 did not plan to issue a traditional joint communiqué.

Instead, France, which holds the G7 presidency this year, is expected to release a presidency statement alone — a sign of visible policy distance between Washington and several allies.

British Concerns Over Hormuz

Yvette Cooper called for a rapid end to the conflict and warned that Iran’s de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is threatening global trade.

She stressed that international shipping routes cannot remain vulnerable because of regional escalation, especially as oil prices continue rising.

Rubio’s Focus Remains Broader

Rubio’s public remarks focused largely on diplomacy involving Russia and Ukraine rather than offering detailed new public guidance on Iran.

He said Donald Trump remains committed to seeking a ceasefire and negotiated settlement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Trade Tensions Also Building at WTO

At the same time, the United States faces criticism at the World Trade Organization ministerial meeting in Yaoundé.

Jamieson Greer defended Washington’s trade measures as necessary corrections to what the U.S. sees as structural imbalances in the global trading system.

Washington also continues blocking appointments to the WTO Appellate Body, keeping the dispute settlement mechanism weakened.

Why This Matters 🌍

The key concern among allies is that the Iran conflict is no longer isolated:

  • Energy markets remain unstable ⛽

  • Shipping lanes are under pressure 🚢

  • Russia-Iran strategic coordination may reshape multiple conflicts ⚠️

  • U.S.-European policy differences are becoming more visible 🤝
