Soldiers Clash With Cartel Gunmen After Killing of El Mencho

Mexican security forces continued battling cartel gunmen Monday, a day after the army killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

More than 70 people have died in the operation and its violent aftermath, according to authorities.

Gunfire Continues in Tapalpa

The clashes followed a military raid in Tapalpa, Jalisco, where Oseguera was tracked to a hideout. Officials said he fled into a wooded area with two bodyguards after a shootout with troops. All three were wounded, captured, and later died while being transported to Mexico City.

On Monday, Tapalpa showed stark contrasts — children played in the streets and shops reopened — but gunfire still echoed nearby. Roads remained blocked as cartel members clashed with heavily armed security forces.

Rising Tensions Across Jalisco

Authorities confirmed the death toll includes soldiers, suspected cartel members, and civilians, though details remain limited.

The killing of Mexico’s most powerful drug lord has triggered widespread unrest, raising security concerns across the state of Jalisco.
